A male suspect who tried to escape arrest in Delta wound up causing thousands of dollars of damage to police vehicles.

The Delta Police Department (DPD) stated today (January 21) that an officer on patrol in an unmarked police vehicle saw a Subaru without a front license plate that was parked illegally while running at a North Delta gas station on January 7.

After backup police arrived and approached the vehicle with activated emergency equipment, the driver attempted to flee in his vehicle by ramming two occupied police vehicles before he was apprehended.

DPD spokesperson Cris Leykauf stated in a news release that neither the suspect nor the police were injured but the police vehicles sustained an estimated $9,000 worth of damage.

William Mark Spence, a 30-year-old male of no fixed address, is charged with two counts of assault of an officer and carrying, using, or threatening to use a weapon; one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle; and one count of operating a vehicle while being pursued by an office and failing to stop.

Spence is in custody and will appear in court tomorrow (January 22).
