WestJet has issued a safety alert in connection with one of its flights.

That's because a passenger has tested positive for COVID-19 who was onboard Flight 3326 from Vancouver International Airport to Kelowna on March 10.

"Guests in the affected rows of WS3326 (rows 10-16) are considered close contacts and may be at risk of exposure," WestJet said in a statement. "Public health officials recommend that affected individuals self-isolate for 14 days after arrival in Canada and monitor for symptoms. If symptoms occur, they are advised to contact HealthLinkBC at 811."

Shortly after that notification, the public health officer of Canada reported that there are now 313 cases of COVID-19 in Canada, including at least one in every province.

Among them are four confirmed cases involving passengers from the Grand Princess cruiseship. They are staying at a Canadian Forces base in Trenton, Ontario.

Tan described Europe as the "epicentre" of the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that the window to flatten the curve of Canadian cases is narrow.

Health officials hope to stave off a spike in infections that has potential to overwhelm hospitals along the lines of what has occurred in Italy.

"COVID-19 is a serious public health threat," Tam declared. "Today, I am asking everyone to take strong action to help us delay the spread of COVID-19 and to protect as many people as possible."
