Vancouver shoppers will soon get a taste of U.S. department stores on Canadian soil when B.C.’s first Marshalls opens at 8137 Ontario Street on April 4. The Vancouver location is one of several new stores opening across Canada, including ones in Ontario and Manitoba.

Marshalls is a discount retailer owned by Massachusetts-based TJX Companies. The chain, which has over 750 locations across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada, is similar to Winners—a Canadian discount chain also owned by TJX. Marshalls carries brand-name men’s, women’s, and children’s clothes, shoes, and accessories at discounted prices.

The arrival of Marshalls is the first of a few U.S. department stores headed to Vancouver. Target will be taking over 18 Zellers stores across B.C. starting in spring 2013, and Seattle-based Nordstrom is expected to open in downtown Vancouver in 2015.

Having lived in the US, I don't see what the appeal of Marshall's is supposed to be. We already have a better alternative in Winners, owned by the same company. Why they would choose to compete with their own brand is beyond me.

Marshall's and Winner's carry the same merchandise. It is good business to double up. I assume TJX is smart enough not to place stores close to each other. During my time in the US I was a faithful Marshall's customer. I am now a faithful Winners shopper. Now I can be both! I am glad you're here Marshall's!
