Getting to and from Kunming, China, is about to become easier.

According to a YVR Airport newsletter, China Eastern Airlines is launching a direct service from YVR to Kunming on June 26. It will run three times weekly, establishing Vancouver as the first North American destination from Kunming.

Kunming is the capital and largest city in the Yunnan province of Southwest China. Nicknamed the City of Eternal Spring, Kunming attracts tourists for sights such as the stone forest of Shilin National Park and Qiongzhu temple.

According to Lonely Planet, Kunming "has long been regarded as one of China’s most liveable cities", and it's a laid-back place to spend a few days.

Great. A "direct link" to the drug centre of Asia, on the doorstep of Burma and Cambodia and Thailand.

But the flights are not "non-stop" and you have to be held on the plane for 3 hours at the dreadful Pudong Airport far east of Shanghai.
Not even YVR to BKK is non-stop, but at least they let you off the plane for a layover.

I am sure that The Vancouver Airport Authority wants to be the drug import capital of North America. Kunming has a pivotal role as a major conduit point in international drug trafficking as it is the closest major Chinese city situated near the Golden Triangle in Southeast Asia.

Each flight will be a publicity bonus for the YVR airport as headlines will announce this or that people smuggling and worse.

Kunming means 昆明 brilliant descendants, and is renowned for its social troubles.
