A B.C. student has been recognized in a major Canadian fashion design competition. Nicole Boyer, a Richmond resident and fashion design student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, is the only designer outside of Quebec to be awarded one of five grand prizes in the TÉLIO National Design Competition.

Boyer was selected as one of 25 finalists, which included Coquitlam’s Angela Huang and Richmond’s Capri Philip, in November 2013. The finalists were chosen based on design sketches they submitted under the theme of “texture”.

Boyer’s creation, which was inspired by a coat worn by the character Rachel in the movie Blade Runner, won on technical merit. The second-year university student has received a $2,000 scholarship.

“The last few days have been a dream for me,” Boyer stated in a news release. “This scholarship means so much more to me than just the money. Being able to afford another semester of school is great, but really, it was all about the experience.

“It’s hard to describe the feeling of seeing so many accomplished, inspiring people in one place, and getting to showcase all of our designs together. I will never forget this experience, and am honoured that my design was picked as a winner.”

Finalists presented their designs at a fashion show in Montreal before a panel of seven judges including Vancouver designer Nicole Bridger.

Alongside Boyer, this year’s winners included four Collège Lasalle Montréal—Frédéric Joncas, Mathieu Joncas, Alex-Ève Martin, and Ting Pan—who collectively won scholarships totally $15,000. TÉLIO is one of Canada’s leading textile companies.

As annoying as the question "who are you wearing" is on tv interviews, kudos to the local students. Paris catwalk lookout.
