8 style finds to rock for a fortune-filled Lunar New Year

    1 of 9 2 of 9

The Year of the Fire Monkey commences this Monday (February 8) and even if you don’t celebrate the occasion, there’s one Lunar New Year tradition that’s worth adopting: the act of shedding your tired duds for a collection of fresh, just-purchased threads. According to the Chinese, dressing head-to-toe in brand new clothing—preferably those coated in red and gold—helps signify the start of a new year, and let’s just say, we’re not ones to argue.

From gold-plated chimp studs to fiery, '90s-inspired kicks, we’ve rounded up eight style finds that are bound to bring good fortune in the Year of the Monkey.

      Coach

Coach charm flat card case, $70

Coloured in an auspicious red, this cross-grain leather card case from Coach offers a handy place to store plastic, coins, and cash from your lai see. Keep the mini-wallet close and let the cluster of gold charms in key, lock, and feather shapes shower you with luck wherever you wander.

Available at Coach stores (various locations).

      Nordstrom

      Givenchy monkey unisex tee, $837

Channel the confident nature of the monkey with this haute tee from French fashion house Givenchy. The striking graphic—fit for both men and women—is sure to add an effortless edge to even the most laidback of get-ups.

Available at Nordstrom Pacific Centre (799 Robson Street).

      Kate Spade New York

Kate Spade New York monkey see monkey do studs, $48

These adorable monkey studs by Kate Spade New York will have you playing 2016 by ear. Made from a gold-plated metal, crystals, and faux pearl, they're the perfect treat for modest gals looking to indulge in a little luxe.

Available online at Kate Spade New York.

      Prada

Prada Saffiano leather shoulder bag, $2,050

We could wax poetic about Prada’s entire The Monkey Chatters collection—a mash-up of swoon-worthy reds, glittering gold accents, and fuzzy ape figures—but this gorgeous shoulder bag has us going especially bananas. Pair it with a crisp white button-up and boyfriend jeans during the day or tuck away the brass strap to transform it into a compact clutch for your evening LBD.

Available at Holt Renfrew Vancouver (737 Dunsmuir Street).

      Naked and Famous Denim

Naked and Famous fire monkey denim, $160

Naked and Famous Denim is celebrating the New Year in badass style: its limited edition men’s Fire Monkey denim features an illustration of a feisty, banana-wielding primate by comic artist Alvin Lee, plus a subtle red and gold selvedge for good measure. A tapered fit and always-appropriate indigo wash ensure plenty of wear well into the year.

Available at dutil denim (303 West Cordova Street).

      Michael Kors

Michael Kors monkey suede keychain, $48

Known for being creative, smart, and exceptionally mischievous, the monkey is a master of injecting fun into the mundane. Attach this suede charm onto your favourite tote or a set of keys for a touch of whimsy that’s as playful as the frivolous creature it depicts.

Available at Michael Kors (various locations).

      Salvatore Ferragamo

Salvatore Ferragamo monkey silk tie, $235

The beauty is in the details with Salvatore Farragamo’s cheeky, Italian-made silk tie. From afar, the swinging primate motif could pass as a funky geometric pattern, but admirers will find that it’s all monkey business upon closer inspection.

Available at Nordstrom Pacific Centre (799 Robson Street).

      adidas

      adidas men’s Tubular runner, $160

adidas’s iconic Tubular runner has gone rogue—or rather, rouge—for the Lunar New Year. These street-chic kicks feature a debossed reptile-skin pattern overlay while maintaining the same ultra-comfy shape that made the style so covetable in the ‘90s.

Available at adidas (848 Granville Street).
