Ladies Learning Code encourages gender diversity in tech sector

Building websites and computer programming are not the exclusive preserve of men and boys

      Graphic designer Diane Huynh was looking for a career change. So, a year-and-a-half ago, she enrolled in a few workshops put on by Ladies Learning Code in Calgary.

      These beginner-friendly workshops, which teach web-development skills, inspired Huynh to move to British Columbia and complete the Interaction Design Essentials program at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Now the Surrey resident works as a freelance front-end web designer and volunteers as co-lead for Ladies Learning Code’s Vancouver chapter.

      According to Huynh, Ladies Learning Code organizes workshops that introduce people of all genders to HTML, jQuery, WordPress, and other technologies in a “social and collaborative” environment. The Toronto-based nonprofit, which has chapters in cities across Canada, also offers youth programs called Girls Learning Code and Kids Learning Code.

      “I know sometimes a lot of people avoid any kind of tech-related anything because it feels so intimidating, but this environment makes it so much fun,” Huynh said in an interview at the Georgia Straight office. “We have women and men and kids of all ages showing up to these workshops.”

      In Vancouver, Ladies Learning Code holds its volunteer-run workshops at least once a month. The one-day events, which cost $50 to attend, vary in size but always see each student seated at a table with a mentor and three other students.

      Although men participate in Ladies Learning Code workshops as instructors, mentors, and students, Huynh noted the organization aims to encourage more women to work in the technology sector and help increase the diversity in its workplaces. As well, in a competitive job market, coding skills can give prospective employees an “edge”, she asserted.

      “If that office needs someone to build a one-page website, they can do that,” Huynh said. “Or if they need someone to manage their blog or code some basic things, they have those skills.”

      Ladies Learning Code’s next event in Vancouver is Introduction to JavaScript, which will take place on Saturday (November 22) at HootSuite’s headquarters (5 East 8th Avenue). Florida Elago, a software developer for SocialChorus, will be the lead instructor for the workshop.

      The Vancouver resident told the Straight that JavaScript is one of the most popular computer-programming languages.

      “The thing about JavaScript is it’s extremely expressive as a language,” Elago said via Skype from San Francisco. “Even people who don’t know the language very well can just put together a bunch of plug-ins and whatnot and make a web page without knowing a lot about the language.”

      Elago believes that tech jobs aren’t attractive to many women because of the stereotypes associated with them. Thus, she’s happy to volunteer as an instructor and mentor at workshops that have the potential to help rectify the gender imbalance in the male-dominated industry.

      “I want to encourage people to try tech out,” Elago said. “I really get a lot of reward from teaching.”

      Earlier this year, Apple, Facebook, and Google released statistics exposing the lack of diversity at those tech giants. In June, Facebook revealed that women only made up 31 percent of its global workforce. That figure dropped to 15 percent when only tech jobs were counted. (Facebook’s diversity figures also showed that 57 percent of its U.S. employees were white.)

      A December 2013 study by Statistics Canada observed that women remain “underrepresented” in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computer science (STEM) programs at universities in this country. The 2011 National Household Survey found that women comprised 39 percent of STEM graduates aged 25 to 34, compared to 59 percent of all graduates in that age range.

      In May, the Colorado-based National Center for Women and Information Technology published a research summary that pointed out that gender-balanced firms exhibit better financial performance, especially when a significant proportion of senior managers are women. The report noted that these companies also benefit from “superior team dynamics and productivity”.

      “To realize these benefits, organizations must create supportive infrastructures and cultures that foster diversity,” the report stated.

      On November 18, Fariba Pacheleh, president of the Vancouver-based Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology, addressed the House of Commons’ standing committee on the status of women as part of its study on economic leadership and prosperity. The engineer told MPs in Ottawa that “diversity, especially gender diversity, is of paramount economic importance”.

      “Women want to contribute to the economy, are well-educated and eminently capable, and there are many of them, poised—yet few have breached the practical and cultural barriers that prevent reaching their potential,” Pacheleh said, according to a copy of her prepared remarks posted on the SCWIST website. “This is not a minority issue—women are not a minority—it is a historical, cultural issue.”

      Pacheleh called for “comply or explain” policies, whereby corporations report to shareholders if their senior management and workforce are “not sufficiently diverse”. She also advocated the use of “diversity-neutral applications” in hiring to ensure that new employees are selected based on their skills.

      “Corporations need to create a work climate that not only hires women but retains them through clear workplace policies of inclusion and collegiality, work flexibility, active sponsorship, and access to role models and mentors,” Pacheleh said.

      Sandra Wear is the CEO of Canadian Women in Technology, a division of the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance. The technology entrepreneur told the Straight her goal is to achieve gender parity in the tech sector.

      “What happens is if you have one woman at the table, then that one woman is supposed to represent all women, versus if you’ve got a split and you’ve got different women at the table, you suddenly can realize that we have differences in thoughts and opinions,” Wear said by phone from her Vancouver home.

      Wear is also one of the organizers of the Be Like Ada initiative, which held a coding boot camp for 150 teenage girls at the Rocky Mountaineer Station in July. Be Like Ada is planning its second event for next summer.

      “I think that what we’re doing is really important because we’re having girls consider coding that might not have considered coding,” Wear said. “We’re also talking about the fact that coding is another type of literacy, just like you read and write.”

      Huynh remembers how empowered she felt after finishing her first Ladies Learning Code workshop. She wants to share that feeling with others.

      “To go in there and just after one day build a one-page website all by yourself, that’s incredibly encouraging,” Huynh said. “For me, that’s what I love. I love seeing that aha moment in people when they figure it out.”

      Can you have a "diversity" if there are only two genders?

      Women are under-represented in heavyweight boxing.
      Men are under-represented in maternity wards.
      Living people are under-represented in cemeteries.

      The idea that somehow there "should" be a 50-50 split between genders, in everything, (except, perhaps, it seems, dangerous jobs) is the most intellectualy vacuous piece of nonsense ever.

      Men and women cannot compete physically without being assigned different categories, unless you want to have the top spots go to men every time. The logical inference is that this is the same for all competition, and that the only way to integrate women in the sense intended is to get rid of the best for the sake of "diversity." Because someone who runs a race in a few minutes more than the top sprinter, she deserves to be on the medal podium on account of her vagina and the historical opweshions...amirite?

      I don't think you really get the issue, which is clearly shown by you introducing the aspect of physicality - what the hell has that go to do with STEM?
