Over 25 "slow fashion" makers featured at inaugural First Pick Handmade market in Vancouver
Looking to transition your wardrobe from fast-fashion-focused to more locally made, handcrafted items but are unsure where to start? Vancouver’s inaugural First Pick Handmade market offers a welcome beginning point.
Taking place on September 16 and 17 at Heritage Hall (3102 Main Street), the 3,300-square-foot pop-up boutique will offer men’s and women’s apparel, shoes, and accessories from over 25 “slow fashion” vendors based on Canada’s West Coast—many of them in Vancouver.
Expect Scaninavian-influenced threads from hetki / a moment; statement necklaces, rings, and cufflinks crafted from reclaimed woods and broken skateboards by Billy Would; recycled-leather totes from Bronsino Designs; and minimalist bombers and denim by Start with the Basis.
Men’s and women’s skincare products, such as natural deodorant sticks and aromatherapy wands, and sustainably produced towels and textiles will also be available from homegrown brands like Element Botanicals and Le Fil Rouge.
An on-site bar will offer beer and refreshments to visitors while they shop.
The event is founded by Janna Hurtzig, owner of Vancouver’s Winterluxe Recycled Cashmere and Astrosatchel and co-organizer of craft market Shiny, Fuzzy, Muddy. “We identified a real need in Vancouver for an all fashion and accessory only marketplace for both men and women,” Hurtzig said in a press statement.
