Situated on the mall’s upper level, the 1,325-square-foot store carries a large assortment of Mackage’s men’s and women’s outerwear, including lightweight down coats, trenches, leather jackets, and the label’s signature “V collar” parkas (from $590), as well as leather accessories and knitwear. A small selection of children’s apparel is also available.
Many of the products are crafted using wool, nylon, and high-quality goose down, and boast leather details that nod to the company’s beginnings as a contemporary leatherwear producer. The majority of the stock is also water- and windproof and, according to Mackage's website, tested in labs to ensure they provide the utmost warmth.
The Vancouver location, in particular, spotlights a number of water-repellant items, such as reversible wool-and-down trenches, that offer protection against the region’s rain-heavy forecasts. “We don’t want people to think of us as just the cold-winter coat [producer],” Elisa Dahan, cofounder of Mackage, tells the Straight during an interview at the shop. “We have a range of jackets for when it’s actually warm outside, but it’s raining.”
The store’s design, meanwhile, reflects the Canadian label’s fondness for mixing textures and materials in its outerwear lineup: elements such as wood, metal, and marble are featured prominently throughout and the men’s side is lit with the glow of a large photograph depicting snow-capped mountains.
Dahan and cofounder Eran Elfassy state that the B.C. opening has been a “long time coming” for Mackage. Founded in 1999, the brand operates six other standalone shops in North America and is also available at retailers like Holt Renfrew, Artizia, and Nordstrom.
“This is the first time that people in Vancouver can see the full breadth of what the brand represents,” says Dahan.
