Transgender Day of Remembrance 2017 memorial to be held in Vancouver

While Remembrance Day was recently observed on November 11, the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) will be held on Monday (November 20).

The day is dedicated to memorializing all those who have been killed due to transphobia and to raise awareness of the ongoing violence, hate crimes, and discrimination against transgender people.

While transgender people have made progress in gaining acceptance and rights in British Columbia and Canada, transphobia and hate crimes continue on.

For instance in April, Vancouver NDP candidate Morgane Oger was the target of an anti-trans flyer campaign that all political parties denounced. In 2014, Charles Jameson (Jamie) Neel pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the death of New Westminster transgender activist January Marie Lapuz.

In Vancouver, a memorial will be held on Monday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Carnegie Community Centre (401 Main Street) on the main floor.

There will be American sign-language interpretation, and the venue is wheelchair accessible with trans-inclusive washrooms.
