One of the largest international surveys of men who have sex with men (MSM) is being conducted—and Canadian respondents are needed.

The European MSM Internet Survey (EMIS), funded by the European Commission Health Programme, is run by U.K.–based sexual-health organization Sigma Research and was developed with universities, non-governmental organizations, and public-health institutes from over 40 countries.

The first EMIS was held in 2010, drawing data from 181,000 participants, but was limited to Europe.

Although it is European-based, this edition of the survey has expanded to collect data from MSM in various countries—and Canada is being included.

The survey is anonymous (no information will be collected that will identify individuals) and takes around 15 to 25 minutes to complete. Participation is voluntary and can be withdrawn at any time.

After the surveys are collected and compiled, the anonymous data results will be shared among EMIS academic and community collaborators, and will eventually be published on the European Open Data Portal for researchers to access in mid-2018 in various languages.

A high-response rate can help to let governments know that HIV and sexual health are priorities, and to help secure funding for services for MSM.

Vancouver-based Health Initiative for Men is endorsing the survey as it can help address sexual-health issues, including reducing HIV infections, in Canada.

The survey is available in both English and French.

The deadline is December 31.
