Vegan shoe store, Nice Shoes, set to open in Vancouver

Vancouver shoppers will soon have the chance to try a vegan shoe store on for size.

When Nice Shoes opens on March 1, it will be the first “cruelty-free” footwear shop in the city.

The 600-square-foot store, which will be located at 3568 Fraser Street (at East 20th Avenue), plans to sell ethical products that are friendly to animals, the environment, and workers.

In addition to casual and dress footwear, Nice Shoes will carry belts, handbags, and other fashion accessories—all free of leather and other animal products.

Vancouver isn’t the only B.C. city set to get a vegan shoe store in the next few months.

In April, Vshoen plans to open in downtown Victoria.

New Westminster’s Karmavore Vegan Shop (610 Columbia Street), which opened in July 2009, already stocks cruelty-free shoes.

Vegan shoes? Does that mean the shoes don't eat meat?

Don't be an idiot. If you don't know about the animal cruelty issues involved in leather production, then I suggest you learn about them.
You could watch the movie Earthlings, which is available free online, incidentally. http://www.earthlings.com/

Plastic shoes are somehow better for planet? If the shoes break do you have to open windows for 15 minutes and wear gloves before handling as with CFL bulbs?

The pair of shoes in the photo is PVC free. I don't know why people think non-leather = plastic.

Leather tanning is one of the most toxic industries. Children in 3rd world countries are forced to walk waist deep in the chemicals while working long hours at the tanneries. All this so that people in the first world can wear leather and outsource the pollution and high risk labour elsewhere.

Jeez, you vegans have no sense of humor. Have a hamburger, you won't be so cranky.

Way to go towards making Vancouver one (if not THE) most eco-friendly metropolis in North America!

What materials ARE used in the manufacture of these shoes? THe article says nothing about that.
