As part of the 2018 Community Summit, Brave New Work, SFU Public Square and Urban Worker Project are proud to present Skillshare.

Calling all freelancers, contract workers, creatives and solopreneurs! The Urban Worker Project Skillshare is back for the second time in Vancouver!

Business development. Financial planning and income security between gigs. Taxes, deductions and GST payments. Career mentorship. Marketing and branding. Rate setting, invoicing, getting paid on time and what to do and where to go when you don’t. Independent workers have do it all - and know how to do it all - by themselves.

The Urban Worker Project thinks there’s a better way. That better way starts by sharing knowledge and skills in a community of fellow independent workers, experts and senior independents who can provide the straight facts on everything from legal obligations to best practices, and the hard lessons learned from years of working this way.

And, with nearly 30% of Canadians now working independently - and projections showing it could be 50% of workers by 2020 - Canada has a significant contingent of the workforce operating without access to workplace benefits, a pension, job security or labour law protection. That means there’s also work to do to advocate for policy and legislative change that will make work better now and into the future.

The Urban Worker Project Skillshare will delve into all of this, helping you get from being wound up and stressed out by the new reality of work, to being skilled up, calmed down and plugged in! Join us and over 150 other independent workers for this day long gathering to lean on each other, learn from each other, get valuable expert advice, and build community.
