THEATRE IN THE RAW PRESENTS INCIDENT AT VICHY BY ARTHUR MILLER APRIL 11TH – 22ND (WED - SUN) AT STUDIO 16 (1555 WEST 7TH AVE VANCOUVER)

Arthur Miller's drama Incident at Vichy takes on the subject of persecution and racism in France during the early days of WWII. There is unease, fear, and confusion among those who have been detained at a warehouse under suspicion of being Jewish during the Nazi occupation. What may unite them? What divides them? What fate awaits them?

This work is close to the heart for Theatre In the Raw in countless ways. There is a strong message inherent in Miller's play which will only grow louder as extreme events increase worldwide involving intolerance, exclusion and vilification of people. Miller’s 1964 play was acclaimed for its examination of morality, bearing witness to unfolding atrocities, and an individual’s responsibility to act in times of crisis.

About the playwright: Born in Harlem to Jewish parents from Poland in 1915, Arthur Miller is well known for his plays Death of A Salesman and The Crucible. Incident at Vichy was first performed in 1964. It was later adapted for television in 1973. In 2015 the play had a successful month long run off Broadway in New York.

We hope Theatre In the Raw’s production of the play is a powerful moment for Vancouver audiences to understand what can occur if we remain disengaged from the suffering of others. There will be panel discussions after the shows to explore the question: “Can it happen here?”

Incident at Vichy is directed by Jay Hamburger and features a must see ensemble cast that includes Jacques Lalonde and R. David Stephens plus the fine work of Theatre In the Raw designers and crew. Hamburger has been directing Theatre In the Raw’s productions in Vancouver since 1994. The company is entering its 24th season.
