Please join us in boldly going to the 10-year anniversary screening of the Vancouver-made Star Trek: The Next Generation fan film “Chains of Betrayal” at Fox Cabaret on Tuesday, May 1st alongside the world premiere of Ben Jacques’ 2003 shot-for-shot remake of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

“Chains of Betrayal” is an episode length tribute to Star Trek: The Next Generation, a television series that deeply influenced its creators. “Chains of Betrayal” was made on a very low budget of less than $200, largely thanks to the crew’s extensive use of a green screen and stock footage compiled from various Star Trek series. With such silly production and amateur performances, “Chains of Betrayal” made an immediate impression on audiences, premiering to a crowd of over 250 people at Vancouver’s Astoria Hotel on April 30th, 2008. Since then “Chains of Betrayal” has screened in Toronto, Panama City Beach, Edmonton, Atlanta, and the Comox Valley.

“Chains of Betrayal” is set during the fifth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, shortly after the events of “Unification”, where Leonard Nimoy guest-starred as the iconic Spock. In “Chains of Betrayal” Spock returns once again, this time to investigate a surprising disappearance among the senior staff of the USS Enterprise. Derek Howard and Racan Souiedan wrote “Chains of Betrayal” in 2005 and later asked their friend Sam Scott to help them produce the film, which was shot in a classroom at Simon Fraser University’s Harbour Centre campus over two weekends.

In 2003 Ben Jacques was attending the Alberta College of Art and design in Calgary, where he decided to challenge himself by remaking Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers shot-for-shot. With two months left in the semester and almost no money, he decided to remake the first half of this multimillion dollar Hollywood blockbuster in four weeks with a budget of only $150 by relying on friends and resources from around the college. Most props and sets were improvised on the spot. Ben Jacques hopes to complete the second half of the film to coincide with his production’s 20th anniversary in 2023.

We gratefully acknowledge that this event takes place on the traditional, unceded, and occupied territories of the Coast Salish peoples: the mi ce:p kʷətxʷiləm (Tsleil-Waututh), Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. Like the removal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard's stain of blood through 23 generations of his family in "Journey's End", we hope that all levels of government will seek genuine and meaningful truth and reconciliation between Canadians and Indigenous peoples.
