Why is World Refugee Day important? Hear the perspectives of a family doctor who served refugees at a Vancouver clinic and wrote a popular book about it, a professor from Syria living in Canada, and a former refugee who is now a settlement worker.
Speakers:
Martina Scholtens is a family physician, a clinical instructor with the Faculty of Medicine at UBC, and the author of Your Heart Is the Size of Your Fist: A Doctor Reflects on Ten Years at a Refugee Clinic. Martina will read from and speak about her book, which is a recollection of ten years of work as a family doctor at Vancouver's Bridge Refugee Clinic.

Hanadi Ibrahim is a visiting faculty member at SFU. She graduated from Damascus University and completed her PHD in Chemistry in Paris, then returned to Syria to a position of assistant professor at Damascus University. Hanadi came to Canada in 2013 and got the opportunity to come to SFU with the assistance of the Scholars at Risk program.

Sina Yetbarek is a former refugee from Uganda, born and raised in Eritrea. She has been involved in several initiatives advocating immigrant and refugee-related issues and is now a settlement worker.
