Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden presents The Charm of Chinese Gardens, a fine art exhibition of landscapes by Jiangsu-born artist Gao Chen’s. The artist combines the essence of western oil painting technique with his vision of the traditional Classical Chinese form and environment.
The exhibition focuses on Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden’s scenery by reflecting on the beauty and complexity of Garden design. In his artworks, Chen considers the harmony of opposites - such as light and shadows, chaos and structure, natural and artificial elements – which all the components and features of the Garden exhibit. The artist gives importance to the traditional Chinese scenes and objects to emphasize their cultural significance. At the same time, he projects them onto the canvas through the western perspective and style.
Born in Jiangsu in 1946, Gao Chen grew up in Shanghai, China. He studied arts at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Media and Design with famous oil painter Chen Danqing. Upon the graduation, he continued his art career at Shanghai Museum of Arts and Crafts. He became popular in Shanghai thanks to his unique lacquer and oil paintings. After immigrating to Canada in 1989, Gao Chen had a solo exhibition at Basic Inquiry Studio & Gallery in Vancouver in September 2007 and participated in the Omega Gallery group exhibition in May 2015.
