Meet Scott Bowers, a personable WWII vet who started pumping gas on Hollywood Boulevard and ended up enjoying trysts with movie stars of both sexes (sometimes at the same time). Scotty was such a popular date he started farming out assignations to his friends: establishing a network of promiscuity which included Hollywood royalty (Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, George Cukor) and British royals (Edward Windsor).

But this eye-opening doc from Matt Tyrnauer (Valentino: The Last Emperor, Citizen Jane: Battle for the City) is more than just gossip-mongering, it asks us to think again about the sexual mores and morality of the 40s and 50s, when movie stars projected one image but lived out very different lives in private, and asks how much has changed on that front. (To the extent that it has changed, Scotty’s friendship with sexologist Alfred Kinsey may have played a significant part).

As for today, in his 90s now, Scotty’s still an engaging, avuncular fellow, surrounded by friends, unrepentant, and happily married to a woman who until recently had no idea about his storied past.

"Engaging and colourful." Tim Grierson, Screen
