Shirkers
In 1992, filmmaker Sandi Tan was a teenager making the first Singaporean road movie—until her film teacher Georges Cardona disappeared, taking the footage with him. Two decades later, the footage turned up, prompting Tan to direct this blend of fiction and documentary, which conflates the now and the then to marvelous effect. "An exemplary work of counter-lives and alternative histories, intimate self-portraiture and cultural reconstruction, hard-won empathy and painful reconciliation."—New Yorker
