Forums & Talks

Join us for "Making Knowledge Public"—a FREE six-part lecture series dedicated to understanding the changing role of research in society. Guest speaker Dr. Jevin West will explore how the public’s understanding of facts is being influenced by special interest groups, the role of think tanks in (mis)informing the public, and some ideas of how academia and ordinary citizens respond.

This talk will be held at the Fletcher Challenge Theatre, Harbour Centre 1900, SFU Vancouver, and will be followed by a reception.

Jevin D. West is an Assistant Professor in the Information School at the University of Washington and co-founder of the DataLab. He is an affiliate faculty member the Center for Statistics and Social Sciences and a Data Science Fellow at the eScience Institute. With his colleague, Carl Bergstrom, he developed a new course on Calling BS for combatting misinformation, with a particular emphasis on data, figures, visualizations and statistics. The course is now being taught at universities around the globe. The course rooted out of his core research studying the science of science, where he asks questions about the origins of scientific disciplines, the social and economic biases within science, and the impact of publication models on the health of science.
