The Vancouver Art Gallery presents the Canadian premiere of Guo Pei: Couture Beyond, the first-ever fashion exhibition in the Gallery’s history October 13, 2018 to January 20, 2019. China’s foremost couturière Guo Pei is known for her avant-garde silhouettes seamlessly fusing contemporary aesthetics with pre-republic opulence. Tracing the evolution of Guo Pei’s design sensibility over ten years, this exhibition features more than forty breathtaking designs. This includes the imperial yellow cape—constructed from fifty-five pounds of embroidered silk and featuring a five-meter train—famously worn by recording artist Rihanna at the 2015 Met Gala. Visitors will see up-close the unmistakable craftsmanship of Guo Pei’s jaw-dropping fashion masterpieces that have captured the Western imagination.
