Parallel is an exhibition that will be held at the Deer Lake Art Gallery featuring the works of Susan Jessop, Frankie Watt, & Kenneth Yuen, and is hosted and organized by the Burnaby Arts Council. The exhibition will open Saturday, October 27, 2018 and will run until December 15, 2018.

Kenneth Yuen’s primary mediums of choice are sculpture and installation to explore the possible relationships between body, mind and object; in the same way that am interested in the related relationship between viewer, artist and object. His work is often interactive, hoping to explore the aforementioned relationships on a tactile and materiel level, just as how I find meaning to be heavily tied to materiel, process and spatial/bodily experiences.

Frankie Watt-Elphinstone’s work explores our drive to expand into new worlds and the way in which we create comforting and unspoken narratives in reaction to cultural expectations. Drawing on historical and contemporary sources Watt-Elphinstone creates images that are often regarded as both surprising and amusing. In disrupting the accepted view Watt-Elphinstone invites the viewer to adjust their assumptions and form a new view of the world.

Susan Jessop weaves her experiences of the landscape, wildlife and culture of Canada with her memories of the UK, exploring the meaning of 'home'. As a Visual Artist Jessop makes work that helps to make sense of her surroundings. Moving houses and living in different countries throughout my adult life has given Jessop an opportunity to explore the meaning of home and the symbolism of the objects we choose to surround ourselves with. Jessop’s created spaces serve as a stage set for our experiences, in consideration of how our domestic interior spaces reflect our lives and aspirations, and how these interior spaces might intersect with our natural surroundings. Jessop uses paper collage to explore this intersection, working intuitively to pull together different images of rooms/furnishings and the natural environment to create work that, at first sight, appears familiar but with a second look encourages us to question the meaning of the room shaped spaces in which our lives play out.
