Never Forgotten: Public Monuments & Contemporary Memorializing
Ferry Building Gallery, 1414 Argyle Ave., West Vancouver In recent years the idea of the public monument has been transformed: instead of a heroic statue on a pedestal, new monuments are conceived as environments that invite visitors to undertake a personal journey from grief to healing. In this two-part lecture series we will survey significant new monuments worldwide and trace the emergence of this new social and artistic ideal. Works to be examined include Maya Lin’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial (1982) and such local Vancouver monuments as Beth Alber’s Marker of Change (2007), the Vancouver AIDS Memorial, and Douglas Coupland’s Terry Fox Memorial (2011). Presenter: Dr. Efrat El-Hanany, art historian, Capilano University
