In 1906 - well ahead of Kandinsky’s "invention" of abstract painting - Swedish painter Hilma af Klint began a series of 200 striking abstract works based on her occultist forays into spiritualism. The subject of a record-breaking show at the Guggenheim in 2018-19, af Klint is finally getting long-deserved recognition, and Halina Dyrschka’s documentary both reveals the amazing power - and the sheer modernity - of her paintings while placing her story within a scandalously blinkered art historical context.
