After an impaired-driving charge, Donna (Shan MacDonald) fulfills a community-service sentence at an animal shelter. Estranged from a daughter who won’t return her calls, she finds companionship in a dog she saves from euthanization and takes home. Donna soon fills her apartment with more and more pets as she tries to fill an emotional void. In her debut feature, Heather Young takes a compassionate look at her protagonist’s inner world without shying away from the selfishness of projecting love and care.
