Taking cues (and lifting narration) from "crank" letters written to Winnipeg’s legendary Action Line radio broadcast, Ryan McKenna (Le Coeur de madame Sabali) composes a lustrous city symphony that unfolds through monochromatic tableaux set inside the eccentrically appointed apartments occupied by seemingly decent people with outrageous opinions. Conjuring an ethereal mood while remaining rooted in compassion for its characters, Cranks is a testament to Winnipeg’s beguiling, deep-seated weirdness.
