Calendar Girls by Tim Firth lifts up the often hilarious, sometimes tense, true story of women from Yorkshire who rallied around their grieving friend by baring their torsos to raise money to make the waiting space in the cancer ward a little more comfortable. These women and their photographer created calendar images in carefully constructed shots, and angles that bring a smile to your face. Women of a certain age – well out of their comfort zone – with curves, flaws, insecurities and a sense of daring manage to pose with confidence as they exclaim the famous line “We’re going to need considerably bigger buns!” The play is about taking care of each other, doing something brave, being real, and building community. Calendar Girls is revealing and fun!
