The New Orchestra Workshop (NOW) Society commemorates their 40th year with performances of new works in a four-day interactive archival and performative installation placing the Society as one of Canada's most significant improvisatory creative music collectives.

Nov. 15-18: Archival Installation, Grand Opening Nov. 15 @7pm, Open to the Public 10am-10pm - Includes photos, scores, posters, and interviews documenting over 4 decades of one of Canada's most significant creative music collectives! Free.

Nov. 15, 8pm: NOW Improv Workshop Concert - Featuring workshop participants and guest pianists Kris Davis (one of the singular talents on the New York jazz scene), Rory Cowal, and Lisa Cay Miller.

Nov. 16, 8pm: Trading Places: Un Échange d’Improvisateurs - NOW Society, in partnership with The Coastal Jazz and Blues Society, Music on Main, Western Front, Suoni Per Il Popolo, is proud to present an improvised concert curated by resident artists Ellwood Epps (trumpet) and Vicky Mettler (guitar).

Nov. 17, 8pm: NOW Society Ensemble Concert - The NOW Ensemble will perform ISCM works by international composers Éric Normand, Frederik Gran, Henri Augusto Bisognini, and premiere an interactive community work by Lisa Cay Miller. Featuring guest artists Lina Allemano (trumpet) and Kris Davis (piano).

Nov. 18, 3:30pm: Panel Discussion - Chaired by Kevin McNeilly, Associate Professor of English at UBC and researcher with the International Institute for the Critical Studies in Improvisation, this discussion will contemplate the importance of improvisation and collaboration and the future of the Society. Free.

Nov. 18, 6:30pm: Closing Reception Fundraiser and informal dinner - A wonderful way to give back to the Society and to meet NOW artists and composers Kris Davis, Lina Allemano, and Lisa Cay Miller. Register NOW - Registration is $25 and limited to 30.

Nov. 18, 8pm: NOW Orchestra Concert - In celebration of 40 years of creative and improvised music in Canada and abroad, the concert program highlights the Society’s legacy. Featuring guest artists Lina Allemano and Kris Davis and the reinstatement of the NOW Orchestra.
