Vancouver, BC — With director David Mackay at the helm, Mitch and Murray Productions returns with another dynamite play, Lydia R.Diamond’s Smart People, running this November 3rd to 18th at Studio 16 in Vancouver.

The Story: On the eve of Barack Obama’s 2008 Presidential Election, four hyper-intelligent Cambridge residents find that -- despite their best intentions upon broaching the subject -- the topic of race is a treacherous one, full of stumbles and wrong turns. Brian (Aaron Craven), a neuroscientist, is studying the brain’s responses to race and its societal implications. Ginny (Olivia Cheng), a psychiatrist, is studying low-income Asian-American women’s reaction to stress. Jackson (Kwesi Ameyaw), a young doctor, has opened a clinic for low-income patients. Valerie (Katrina Reynolds), a talented actor, is struggling to make ends meet by working as a maid.

Through bright, funny dialogue and fast-paced vignettes, playwright Lydia Diamond (Broadway’s Stick Fly) brings her quartet of complicated characters to vibrant life. As they each bull-headedly pursue their professional and personal goals, they find that issues of self-awareness, identity, and race are stumbling blocks that even “smart people” can’t seem to avoid. At this cultural moment, Smart People is red hot in its relevance.

With 12 Jessie nominations to its name, Mitch and Murray Productions is a theatre company that lives on the edge, with a focus on contemporary, character-driven storytelling that rocks the status quo. Recent works include the Vancouver premieres of the Pulitzer nominated play Detroit by Lisa D’Amour, Pulitzer Prize nominated plays Rapture Blister Burn and Becky Shaw by Gina Gionfriddo, Lungs by Duncan MacMillan and Race and Speed-the-Plow by David Mamet — all contemporary urban stories, with morally complex and unpredictable characters. Making their home in the cozy confines of Studio 16, Mitch and Murray Productions has been tagged by a loyal audience base as “HBO for the stage.”
