Bao Bei Chinese Brasserie serves up dishes inspired by the cuisine of Shanghai, Taiwan, and Vietnam. This Asian-style eatery is open late for dinner six nights a week, from Monday through Saturday.
Head chef Joel Watanabe has created a menu where the Asian culinary tradition rubs shoulders with that of the West, as evidenced by appetizers like the beef tartar, deep-fried anchovies, and crispy daikon cakes. Larger menu items, like the Dan Dan Revolution (egg noodles in a sesame broth, with greens, cucumber, braised and fried pork cheeks, preserved turnip and sesame seeds), are warm and satisfying.
Desserts include a fried banana, served with a lime and coconut sorbet, and an almond panna cotta, served with kumquat comfit and salted cinnamon and almond brittle. Creatively named cocktails abound here: be sure to try the Madame Chiang, made with gin, Fernet-Branca, grapefruit juice.
Bao Bei Chinese Brasserie has won several awards, including the Georgia Straight’s Golden Plate Award and is a Best of Vancouver Award.
