Father’s Day gifts for the dad who loves to sleep

Maybe he's an exhausted new dad or simply the kind of person who craves being cozy: if the father you’re celebrating on June 21 needs and loves a good sleep, here are three ideas to help him drift off and stay in slumber.

      Sustainable sleep

Takasa Lifestyle Company, a Vancouver start-up, is Canada’s first manufacturer of Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified organic and Fairtrade cotton-certified homewares. In working to improve the lives of those involved in the supply chain with Fairtrade certification (which ensures that farmers receive a fair and stable price for their cotton) it encourages Canadians to seek out ethical and sustainable bed and bath linens. Takasa’s sheets are ethically produced in India, from farm to mill to finished product of hypoallergenic, hand-picked cotton free of pesticides and GMOs. The sheet sets (starting at $239) come in white, natural, or grey in two versions: Cool & Crisp (finished with 300 thread count percale weave cotton) or Warm & Luxurious (with 300 thread count sateen weave). Every last detail is thought out, from the extra deep pockets on the fitted sheet so it stays in place to the coconut buttons securing the case the sheets come in. For every order placed, Takasa plants a tree with One Tree Planted. The company also works with greenstory.ca to calculate the environmental impact of its entire supply chain. Here’s an example: one of its sheet sets saves more than 3,000 litres of water compared to one made with conventional cotton.

      Heavy breathing

Weighted blankets are a thing. Just as the name implies, these blankets have added heft to give the body a sense of calm, kind of like a hug. Designed to promote relaxation, they can help diminish stress and anxiety. Casper’s version consists of durable, quilted chambers for even distribution of its microbead fill and a breathable cotton cover to keep you cool. The company recommends a blanket that’s 10 percent of your body weight for optimal comfort. Prices are $219 for 10 pounds, $229 for 15 pounds, and $239 for 20 pounds (and include free shipping). The company partners with organizations such as International Rescue Committee and a Sense of Home to give products to people and pups in need of a place to sleep.

      Mindful sleep

If the dad in your life has trouble falling asleep or finds it hard to go back to sleep after waking up in the middle of the night, consider a subscription to the Unplug: Guided Meditation app. There’s a daily meditation, a playlist section, and a gratitude journal. For fathers who like to track such things, the app shows your progress in terms of mindful minutes. A one-year subscription via Indigo is $76.99.
