Here are a few upcoming events that combine food, drag, and queerness—and particularly baking and brunch, with a potential side order of drama—to check out in the days and weeks ahead.

Life is what you bake it

Some local drag queens have been making a splash on national TV, such as Ilona Verley on Canada’s Drag Race.

Sheldon Lynn, also known as Pangolin as a member of Vancouver’s all-Asian drag troupe House of Rice, made the cut as a competitor on the Great Canadian Baking Show’s fourth season.

Lynn will talk with CBC Vancouver news host and producer Isabelle Raghem about being queer on reality television and being your complete self in the spotlight in a one-hour online event presented by the Vancouver Queer Film Festival (VQFF) and CBC Vancouver.

Sheldon Lynn will speak with CBC Vancouver's Isabelle Raghem about being queer and on TV.

It’s part of the lineup at this year’s VQFF, which runs from August 12 to 22.

The Gay Canadian Baking Show: TV, Food, and Identity will be held at 1 p.m. on August 14 and it’s free—tickets are available online at the Out on Screen website.

      Drag on the Drive

The success of the first drag brunch at Havana Vancouver has inspired the team to go bigger and bolder with its followup.

On August 22, Xanax and Mx. Bukuru will host a show featuring nine local dragsters performing throughout the restaurant at 1212 Commercial Drive.

Tickets for seatings at various times from 11:30 a.m. onward are available online—it's $25 for general admission or $35 for VIP tickets (which includes preferred patio seating and a complimentary bottle of bubbles), and both include a donation to B.C. queer resource centre Qmunity.

Havana’s brunch menu includes offerings such as the enchilada brunch skillet, croque señora, chorizo hash, 1212 brunch burger, and more.

DJ and dancer Jojo Zolina will perform at Brunch Club on August 22.

      Brunch beats

The weekend patio party Brunch Club, presented by Public Disco, will hold its next event on August 22, featuring DJ, dance artist, and voguer and waacker extraordinaire Jojo Zolina.

French food truck Chou Chou Crepes will be serving brunch, and there’ll be cocktail specials, JJ Bean cold brew coffee, and Bucha Brew kombucha.

Two time slots are available (10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.), and it’ll be held at the Vancouver Mural Festival Pop-Up Patio at 2015 Main Street.

Tickets are available online for $28.92, and include your brunch meal, which includes a choice of sweet or savoury crepes, or a breakfast burrito.
