The regional transportation authority is resuming a tradition that dates back decades.

This New Year's Eve, passengers can ride buses, SkyTrain, and SeaBus for free from 5 p.m. December 31 until 5 a.m. on January 1.

Last year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the free service was suspended on New Year's Eve.

In bringing the free service back on December 31, fare gates will remain open and passengers are being advised not to tap their Compass cards or pay in any other way.

Those who board before 5 p.m. will still have to tap to use the system.

“Offering a free and safe method of transportation on New Year’s Eve has been a long-standing tradition at TransLink,” CEO Kevin Quinn said in a news release. “While restrictions prevented us from offering this last year, we are excited to bring this tradition back and encourage all those celebrating 2022 to choose transit for a safe ride home.”
