Clerks director Kevin Smith is scheduled to be at the Rio Theatre in East Vancouver at the end of March for two fundraising shows to help save the local landmark.

But today, he's in a California hospital recovering from a massive heart attack.

The 47-year-old former Vancouver Film School student revealed what happened over Twitter, accompanied by a selfie for the ages.

He performed the first of two shows at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, California, before deciding to go to seek medical assistance.

"The Doctor who saved my life told me I had 100% blockage of my LAD artery (aka "the Widow-Maker")," Smith wrote. "If I hadn't cancelled show 2 to go to the hospital, I would've died tonight. But for now, I'm still above ground!"

Smith was born in Red Bank, New Jersey, and met collaborators Scott Mosier and Dave Klein at VFS.

He followed up Clerks with Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and several other films.
