Hindi movie lovers in Vancouver have circled July 1 on their calendars because that's the day actor Salman Khan is coming to town.

The notorious yet lovable bad boy is scheduled to be at the Pacific Coliseum as part of Da-Bangg the Tour: Reloaded along with Bollywood superstar Katrina Kaif.

But now, that could be in doubt.

It's because the star of such films as Sultan and Jai Ho has been sentenced to five years in jail for killing two endangered blackbucks (Indian antelopes).

The hunt took place 20 years ago in violation of wildlife laws.

Khan is in Jodhpur Central Jail, reportedly doing his daily workouts and skipping porridge, according to the Times of India.

India has tough anti-poaching laws, and hunting blackbucks is an offence under section 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

Blackbucks are also culturally significant to Hindus, who make up 80 percent of India's population. Khan is a Muslim.

He's now spending his second day in jail and his bail hearing will resume on Saturday (April 7).

Accomplished actor Tabu was among those who were acquitted in the illegal-hunting case.

Four other Bollywood celebrities—Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam Kothari Soni, and Tabu—were acquitted in the case.

Saif Ali Khan is an A-list star. His father, former Indian cricket team captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, was also once charged with poaching a blackbuck and two hares.

Pataudi died in 2011 before the case could go to trial.

Meanwhile, Tabu is seen by some as India's greatest female actor.

She's well known to western audiences for her roles in Life of Pi and The Namesake

Perhaps her most memorable Hindi-language role came when she played the mother in Vishal Bhadwaj's Haider, which recreated the story of Hamlet set amid the treachery and intrigue of modern-day Kashmir.
