East Vancouver's Rio Theatre to celebrate 10th anniversary, while investors still sought
The ongoing saga of the Rio Theatre's bid to save its site from being sold off is continuing on but there's been a bit of a reprieve—and a reason to party.
Over $500,000 had been raised by the theatre's fundraising campaign (which launched in February) by April 17, though they still have to come up with a $3 million downpayment to purchase the property.
According to the Rio, their campaign is one of the most successful movie-theatre fundraising campaigns on Indiegogo. Although the campaign has ended, they are still accepting donations until May 7 at the theatre. As they're also still seeking investors, interested parties or individuals can contact theatre operator Corinne Lea by email.
In the meantime, the theatre, which has survived many a battle over the past decade, will be celebrating its 10 years of its current incarnation at 1660 East Broadway on Tuesday (May 1) from 7:30 p.m. to midnight.
The evening, hosted by Talent Time's Paul Anthony, will feature a lineup of entertainers that includes comedians Patrick Maliha, Katie-Ellen Humphries, Eric Fell, Graham Clark, and Simon King; poet Duncan Shields and storyteller T.J. Dawe; singer-songwriter Geoff Berner and beatboxer C.R. Avery; burlesque performers Cherry Ontop and Crystal Precious; and DJ Dunks.
Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door, and full information is available at the Rio Theatre website.
