After years of watching horror movies we are all too familiar with the potential dangers that lurk in every corner. We know about the monster under the bed, the criminal in the closet, the clown in the drain, the masked murderer at the end of the telephone, and the killer behind the shower curtain.

We’ve watched, between sweaty fingers, as our favourite characters on-screen go through all manner of torment.

Now, from IndustryWorks Studios, the producers behind the cult phenomenon American Mary, comes Selfie From Hell, the latest horror flick that promises to enter us into a whole new realm of fear.

Like all good scary movies, it strikes us in a place we thought we were safe.

Yes, the sinister villain of Selfie From Hell snares its victims through, as the title might suggest, selfies. And no filter or editing can save you from a dark, ugly, tear-inducing horror that awaits you on the other side of the lens.

The story follows Hannah, who begins a relentless Internet search to discover the cause of the mysterious demise of her cousin, a vlogger called Julia. When she stumbles upon Julia’s vlog entries, Hannah finds herself immersed deep in the dark web—in a place where terror knows no end.

From there, we are given a glimpse of what might be beyond our selfies and the blackest corners of the Internet.

The Selfie From Hell short, which launched online in 2015, has already frightened over 20 million viewers with one well-placed, well-timed, jump-scare. And you can watch the priceless reactions online, too.

But let’s be honest, there is nothing quite like seeing the horror on the big screen. Selfie From Hell opens across Canada at Cineplex and Landmark cinemas on Friday (May 4).
