VIFF 2018: No One Will Ever Know

Mexico

Mexican writer-director Jesús Torres Torres doubled as a still photographer while prepping for his first feature, which marries his love of spectacular imagery with deep knowledge of spaghetti westerns and telenovelas to come up with an unforgettable fable about maternal love and thwarted ambitions.

It’s also tremendous good fun, since it sees everything from the POV of a precocious little boy who turns the tribulations of his ill-matched parents and their dusty nowhere town into soapy westerns resembling the old black-and-white movies he watches on a tiny TV at the local store. It’s one of the festival’s must-see movies.
