VIFF 2018: Central Airport THF

Germany/France/Brazil

This unpushily humanistic doc could have offered a little more background on Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport, now a mixed-use facility.

As an outdoor playground for Berliners and a (not quite) temporary holding place for refugees still in the vetting process, the massive structure mainly houses families in transition. The film follows, for just over a year, one young Syrian migrant pinning his hopes on a new life in a cold climate. Although we get some sense of the trouble these people are fleeing, the movie is best at showing how harmoniously locals and newcomers can work together when, even under stressful conditions, they know what they’re trying to achieve.
