VIFF 2018: Last Summer

U.K.

Brit-TV veteran Jon Jones comes a cropper in his writing-directing feature debut, which goes for Stand by Me nostalgia in a Welsh countryside of the (rather randomly chosen) 1970s.

Early on, the elder brother of a kid from the preteen trio centring this episodic Summer sees his mum murdered. The rest of the movie follows their reactions to that hideous event. But the filmmaker doesn’t show us enough about their personalities beforehand to make it all matter as much as it should. A subplot about possible romance between the teenage witness and a comely young female cop only adds to a sense of formulaic, if well-shot, balderdash.
