VIFF 2018: The Lost City of the Monkey God

The cheese factor is fairly high in this boys’ own adventure involving several expeditions setting out to uncover a Mayan city legendarily buried deep in uncharted Honduran jungle.

But this TV-ish doc’s gee-whiz tone does seem a good fit with the middle-aged lads (and a very few women) who use new imaging technology to reclaim evidence of lost humanity. Most intriguingly, the group is dogged by archaeologists who dismiss them as lead-footed treasure-hunters. The crowd we follow beefs up their science in response, with mixed results, but what this really underlines is that wealthy nations are not spending enough to explore and preserve veiled ghost towns of the past.
