While Cineplex has enhanced its venues with features such as D-Box and VIP theatres, the company has announced plans to roll out more entertainment-enhancing technology in its theatres across Canada—and Vancouver is being eyed for future locations.

Today (September 19), Canada's Cineplex announced a new partnership with South Korean–based company CJ 4DPLEX to add the 4DX experience to up to 13 Cineplex locations across Canada in the years to come.

The first 4D auditorium opened in Toronto at Cineplex Cinemas Yonge-Dundas in 2016.

The 4D technology adds immersive and experiential elements to movies such as motion-synchronized seats, air and wind, fog, rain, snow, lightning, bubbles, vibrations, and scents.

The first new 4DX theatre will be built at Scotiabank Thaetre Chinook in Calgary.

4DX has been installed in 561 auditoriums in 59 countries and is set to expand to 630 auditoriums by the end of this year. Movies shown in 4DX have included Jurassic World, The Meg, Atomic Blonde, and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.

      But there's more.

On September 13, Cineplex also announced a partnership with Seattle's VRstudios. The company offers eight VR experiences in environments that vary from 100 to 2,400 square feet for untethered multiplayer, free-roaming attractions.

Cineplex installed a VRstudios attraction at the Rec Room in Edmonton, Alberta, and aims to open about 30 to 40 additional locations across Canada by 2021.

The Georgia Straight asked Cineplex communication director Sarah Van Lange if Vancouver would be under consideration for 4D and VR locations.

"The answer is an absolutely absolutely," she said, with a laugh.

While the only new 4DX location confirmed for now is Calgary, she added: "We definitely will be looking and are looking closely at markets like Vancouver, Winnipeg, Montreal, [and] Ottawa as they're all perfect larger markets that can sustain particularly 4DX."
