VIFF 2018: The Seen and Unseen

Indonesia/Netherlands/Australia/Qatar

When 10-year-old Tantri’s twin brother, Tantra (Ida Bagus Putu Radithya Mahijasena), is hospitalized for a brain tumour that threatens him with the progressive loss of each of his senses, Tantri (Ni Kadek Thaly Titi Kasih) increasingly strains to remain connected to him.

But she does so through surreal means, in nocturnal, wordless, movement-based vignettes. With striking imagery and observant cinematography, director Kamila Andini’s visual storytelling integrates an admirable, effortless artistry steeped in Balinese dance, puppetry, and theatre in natural and sublime ways. An aesthetic and intellectual pleasure to watch.
