As the city heads into the holiday season as well as colder weather, some local efforts have been initiated to assist those less fortunate at this time of the year.

While warming shelters have launched to help homeless people escape the cold temperatures at night, a local public broadcaster is also opening its doors to ensure that those in need can continue to access food.

CBC Vancouver will once again hold an open house at its broadcast centre (700 Hamilton Street) in Downtown Vancouver to raise funds for B.C. food banks.

The event, to be held on Friday (December 7), will include a daylong schedule of live broadcasts from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and newsroom tours from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Attendees will be able to meet the recently announced CBC Vancouver News team, in which former CTV news anchor Mike Killeen joined Anita Bathe, Johanna Wagstaffe, Dan Burritt, and Lien Yeung.

Also on hand will be the National's Andrew Chang and Ian Hanomansing; Go Public's Erica Johnson; CBC Radio hosts Stephen Quinn, Michelle Eliot, and Gloria Macarenko; and CBC Kids' Daniel Tiger and Chirp.

For those who make a donation, there's a chance to win prizes from the Vancouver International Wine Festival, Vancouver Canucks, Deep Cove Kayak, Whistler, Victoria, and more.

For full details, visit the CBC Vancouver website.

Elsewhere in B.C, fundraising events will also be held at CBC Victoria and CBC Prince George on the same day.
