Kevin Spacey was once one of Hollywood's biggest stars, but now he's facing the possibility of going to jail.

The Boston Globe has reported that Spacey will be tried for a felony offence in connection with an alleged sexual assault on a teenage male.

Spacey is scheduled to be arraigned in Nantucket District Court on January 7 on one count of indecent assault and battery.

It reportedly involves the son of a former Boston TV news anchor, who went public with the allegation in October 2017.

That led to Spacey being cut from the House of Cards series on Netflix and as J. Paul Getty in Ridley Scott's feature film All the Money in the World.

Today, Spacey posted an unusual video on his social media accounts.

He called it "Let Me Be Frank" and in it, he declared that he's not afraid.

Kevin Spacey posted this video on his website today.

The video has, not surprisingly, led to a backlash against him on Twitter.

According to the website of Massachusetts lawyer Russell J. Matson, indecent assault and battery is also known as "sexual assault".

It happens when a person "allegedly touches another person in an 'indecent' way".

To be convicted, the prosecution must prove that the victim was at least 14 years old, that this touching occurred without justification or excuse, and that it was indecent.

In addition, the prosecution must prove that there was no consent on the part of the victim.

"A conviction for Indecent Assault and Battery carries penalties of up to 5 years in state prison or 2 ½ years in the house of correction," the website states. "In addition, a person convicted for Indecent A&B must register with the Sex Offender Registry Board (SORB), and provide a DNA sample."

Spacey has won Academy Awards for his performances in The Usual Suspects and American Beauty.
