The most popular film at the domestic box office in 2018 also had the best costumes, according to members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

They awarded the Oscar for Best Costume Design to Ruth E. Carter, who oversaw this area on the smash hit Black Panther.

"Marvel may have created the first black superhero but through costume design, we turned him into an African king," Carter said.

It was her first Oscar after a long career in the film industry.

"This has been a long time coming," she declared.
