VIFF 2019: Tapeworm

Canada

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Hangdog Adam Brooks (The Editor) takes a bloody shit in a field, viewed in loving close-up before the credits roll on this shaggily amusing effort from Winnipeg. While he frets over his health and his depressed wife’s loyalty, a couple of stoners buy a cheap cannabis flag between bouts of outdoor rutting on a dirty mattress, a standup comedian weathers tough rooms and even tougher health issues, and a sullen lardass (played by codirector Milos Mitrovic) makes life generally unpleasant for his partner. (Or maybe it’s his mom?)

These stories kinda intersect, but it doesn’t really matter when Tapeworm’s deadpan tone is the real attraction here, climaxing with a cosmically cruel punch line at the expense of that poor comedian.
