VIFF 2019: Knives and Skin

USA

Fresh from dividing the audience at FrightFest, this riot of mood and colour is nominally about the mysterious disappearance of teenager Carolyn Harper, mom's ensuing freak-out, and the impact on her totemically styled friends (all of whom belong to a choir that performs reverent versions of '80s hits like "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "Blue Monday"). If that puts us somewhere inside Twin Peaks/Stranger Things territory—topped up with some Carrie, It Follows, and Donnie Darko—Jennifer Reeder's film is distinguished by a kind of estrogen-snakepit delirium in which every cast member appears to have been hypnotized, and all the men are presented as utterly pathetic.

Needless to say, I loved it.
