Neighbouring Sounds director Kleber Mendonça Filho always has volatile observations about race, class, and history. But here, directing with production designer Juliano Dornelles, Mendonça gets lost in the bloody weeds of a two-hour-plus sci-fi/slasher flick homage that never really finds its footing. In this Seven Samurai-type tale of a small outback village besieged by international predators, seemingly crucial characters disappear for long stretches, replaced by amateurishly acted baddies led by cult dude Udo Kier.

Up-the-people political messaging is gradually swamped by sadistic imagery that the filmmakers seem to enjoy a little too much.
