Here's an event for film fans who enjoy freaking out about Canadian cinema.

The First Weekend Club (FWC) and the Vancouver Public Library (VPL), in partnership with the B.C. branch of the Directors Guild of Canada, have teamed up to launch the Canadian Film Salon, a series of free events to showcase Canadian screen talent.

The first Canadian Film Salon was held in late September with a screening of Jason James’ Entanglement, hosted by VPL writer-in-residence screenwriter Ken Hegan.

The next event will be a free screening of Freaks, directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, at 7 p.m. on October 30 at the VPL central branch (350 West Georgia Street).

In this 2018 sci-fi thriller, seven-year-old Chloe (Lexy Kolker) lives isolated in a dilapidated house with her controlling, paranoid, and overprotective father (Emile Hirsch). She also lives in fear of the outside world where “abnormals” live. But she finally escapes, she meets a mysterious stranger (Bruce Dern) as she discovers a strange new world beyond the confines of her home.

The film also stars Grace Park, Amanda Crew, and more.

Lipovsky will participate in a post-screening discussion about the film, moderated by Hegan. There’ll also be a reception at the Library Square Public House Pub, with a cash bar that will feature a special vodka-based drink, “The Bittersweet Revenge”.
